We have elected a new committee at our annual general meeting (AGM). Elaine stays on a Chairman, Steve as Treasurer and Julie as Secretary. We welcome new committee member Matthew, along with the re-nomination and election of Denise, Emma, Jo and Simon.

Progressive supper - Friday 5 August 2011
This event is open to all members and family. Tickets cost £10. The idea is that you have an evening meal spread over visit to different member's homes in Wellesbourne. The current plan is:

We will be enjoying our next pub night this Thursday 9 June at 8.30 at the King's Head. Hope you can manage to come along for a chat, as we are “between plays” at the moment. We meet every second Thursday each month, usually in the King's Head, Wellesbourne.

WADS progressive supper (5 August 2011)
We are planning an evening of drinks (and supporting courses of food) moving from house to house in Wellesbourne, provisionally booked for Friday 5 August. Please note, this is for paid up members (and partners) only. We will require commitment by way of a £5 per head deposit, which you can pay at the pub night or AGM.

Warwickshire Association for the Blind (WAB) WADS help with re-enactment of inaugural meeting

WADS is proud to be involved with the 100th celebrations of the Warwickshire Association for the Blind. WADS actors will appear alongside other members of the Warwickshire Amateur Community Theatre (ACT) at an event due to be held on 2 June 2011 at the historic Town Hall in Leamington Spa. ACT is re-enacting the first inaugural meeting of WAB in 1911, in full period dress. The year the charity was formed. Invited guests include members and volunteers of WAB. On Saturday 14 May 2011 WADS will be presenting an evening of great comedy entertainment. We will be performing two one act comedies ('Cardboard Cavaliers' and a 'A Quiet Night In') and no less than 6 comedy sketches!

'Cardboard Cavaliers' is a social farce by John Waterhouse, featuring the fortunes of a homeless family in a big city. 'A Quiet Night In' by David Walker continues the comedy with the amusing goings-on in a household.

Casting meeting for our May production

We are holding a casting meeting for this year's May play next week (24 February 2011). So far our director has picked out a couple of possible plays and from first impressions they look like great comedy choices.

We are also putting on a number of shorter comedy sketches, so there will be something for everybody.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who fancies trying a bit of acting or someone looking for an easy way into amateur drama, as there will be lots of smaller parts available. Get in touch if you want more details about the casting meeting.

Warwickshire amateur community theatre (Warwickshire act) is a small non-profit organisation aimed at supporting amateur theatre groups across Warwickshire. Warwick Phoenix Players present 'Death and the Maiden' by Georgina Reid. They are performing on the 8th, 10th and 11th of July in the Unitarian Chapel Gardens, High Street, Warwick. Pub Socials
This last year we have been trying to meet informally every month in the pub. This hopefully gives new potential members a chance to meet some of our members in a relaxed atmosphere over a few drinks! We are meeting next on Thursday 18 June in The King's Head, Wellesbourne, 8pm ish. We'll be meeting again on Thursday 9 July in the Boar's Head, Hampton Lucy.

We'll we've just finished another production. Our audience was kept entertained with a nice selection of comedy sketches and even a musical piece (unusual for us, as none of us can sing!). A bit of audience participation went down well, with two people making fools of themselves all in the name of fun.

Educating Rita - The Loft Theatre Company

Last Saturday some of us went to see Educating Rita by Willy Russell at the Loft Theatre in Leamington. We all enjoyed it immensely. Many people will of course have seen the 1983 film, with Julie Walters and Michael Caine, and so it's impossible not to be tempted to compare the two. In the film we are able to meet more characters than the stage version and so on stage there is more pressure on the two actors to convey the full picture of their background stories and situations.

Cathryn Bowler did a brilliant job of playing the fast talking, energetic Rita. At one point in the play she undergoes a wonderful transition from a housewife on an Open University course into a more typical university student (much to the disgust of her tutor Frank).

Peter Ward, plays the suitably word weary ex-poet Frank. In some ways I felt his character could have come across as a little more unkempt and depressed. His hair perhaps a bit more untidy and scruffy, much like the effective set.

The chemistry between the actors worked well, Peter Ward doing a nice job of showing how uncomfortable Frank is with his young student's progress into what he regards as a typical student.

The low position of the Loft's stage, makes for an intimate experience, where you do feel part of the play. The set was convincing as Frank's office, however one of two small details niggled me a bit. One of the boxes on the floor had 'stage plans' on it and their was a tiny reflective star near the door handle on the exit. Clearly there to aid the actors on and off the stage in the dark, between scenes.

Overall the production was excellent. There are some nice photo's of the production on the Loft Theatre's website.

Educating Rita

Some of us are off to see Educating Rita at the Loft Theatre in Leamington Spa. I have, of course, seen the 1983 film of the same title with the talented Julie Walters and Michael Caine. They have a lot to live up to. The transformation of Walters character, Rita, from a poorly educated working class housewife at the same time as the re-awakening of Frank Bryant's (Caine) interest in teaching is truly wonderful. The chemistry between the two leads, perfect.

We are hard at work rehearsing for our May production of The Last Bread Pudding by Nick Warburton. We have all had a great time getting into role in this very funny and cleverly written play. Our newest member has had to hit the ground running after being cast into the role of Ken. His first bit of acting since University some time ago! He seems to have taken to it like a duck to water. The rest of the cast are still laughing at some of the lines in the play, which is a good sign!

We will be performing the play, together with a couple of comedy sketches for one night only on Saturday 17 May 2008, from 7.45pm in the village hall. Tickets cost £6 (£5 conc) and are available directly from us.

"The committee of an amateur dramatic group is meeting to discuss a new play, "The Last Bread Pudding", written by one of its members. We notice that, strangely, the presentation of the meeting to us is reflecting the ideas put forward by the committee, making the play a demonstration as well as a discussion of those ideas. Wildly tounge-in-cheek, stylized and hilariously over-the-top, this is a clever and entertaining piece, ideal for festivals."

Lighthorne Drama Group will be performing Happy Families by John Godber on the 6th, 7th and 8th of December at Lighthorne Village Hall. Bar opens at 7.30pm, curtain up at 8pm. Tickets are £8.50 and include a hot supper.

Time has really flown by and it's nearly time for us to perform our November production of Seeds of Doubt by Peter Gordon. The cast have been working really hard and we are all now looking forward to seeing the fruits of our labours on stage for real! This year we have decided to encourage people to just buy their tickets on the door, but if you want to reserve them before hand you can do it online.

Cubbington Players will be putting on a comedy called 'On Monday Next' by Philip King: 'The Drossmouth Repertory Theatre Company are rehearsing for their performance of a new play, 'The Morals of Melisande', which is due to open on Monday next. We eavesdrop on the play in rehearsal. Unfortunately the play's author turns up to help with the production, help which is not entirely appreciated by the Producer, Harry Blacker, or the rest of the cast. Interruptions and disruptions abound and we get a glimpse of just what goes on before each play hits
the stage...'

"The latest play from the author of the popular Out of Focus is set in the garden of Alan and Claire's suburban house. While Alan attempts to tend his vegetable plot, his peace of mind is lumbered not only with his impending fortieth birthday, but also because he harbours suspicions about Claire's fidelity. The sanctity of his garden initially provides some respite though is soon further upset by the ongoing squabbles of their next door neighbours Jill and Dave. When a secret message falls into the wrong hands, a chain reaction of events begins which takes in not only the two couples but also two other friends, the well meaning but inept Derek and Sarah, recently separated from her husband. Alan's concerns are temporarily eased by a surprise birthday party, but the evening's events only serve to throw the other relationships into turmoil and sow the seeds of doubt for everybody!"

We are treasure hunting this Sunday, starting from the Village hall at 10.30am. If you want to take part contact us. Entry costs a fiver.

Summer BBQ - Saturday 7 July
This year we'll be BBQing at Hilary's from 7.30 onwards. Let us know if you are coming. She is organising all the food and so on, you just need to supply £5 a head.

AGM and Casting for November production - Monday 9 July
Head down to the village hall from 7.30 onwards for this years Annual General Meeting, where you get your chance to elect a new committee. This year we'll be holding a casting meeting for our November production straight after.

We will be performing 'Busybody' by Jack Popplewell in May.

This hilarious play centres on a voluble cleaning woman who keeps telling the police how to mind their business and who steps forward with the right evidence in every pinch. One night she finds a body. By the time the police arrive, there is no body and no evidence. The wrong alarms are sent out, murdered men turn up alive, and the whole thing is chalked up to the cleaning woman's imagination until an unidentified body is discovered on and the cleaning woman uncovers more evidence in the course of her duties. Is the company owner staging his own murder? Or did he kill his wife's lover? Is the lover a firm employee or someone else? Where do the two female assistants fit in? What is the wife withholding? A thousand laughs and tingles delighted London audiences. (Description adapted from Samuel French)

Our director, chose 'Pull the Other One' A Farce by Norman Robbins.

Here's a summary of the plot...

"Albert Perkins is blessed with a loving wife, Muriel, and cursed with a fearsome mother-in-law, Boadicea. When his friend Hilary Armitage writes to him reminiscing about the good times they used to have, Boadicea reads the letter and determines to remove her daughter instantly from the clutches of the sex-fiend. Albert has a hard time explaining that the letter is perfectly innocent, and anyway Hilary is a man. He isn't helped when Hilary turns up, wearing a blonde wig and a glamorous evening dress. By the time Hilary manages to explain he's come straight from doing his drag act at the local pub, it's too late - Boadicea has bashed Albert with the poker. Even when he comes round, Albert's troubles are far from over. In a weak moment, he agrees to model for a girl student at the local art school, wearing mainly a potted plant. And Hilary, anxious to make amends for the misunderstanding he has caused, offers to deputise for Albert at bell-ringin practice at St Humphrey's. Both these acts of kindness bring disaster is their wake..."

Humphrey Pumphrey returns...for one night only!

Tonight we will be performing 'Humphrey Pumphrey had a great fall' as part of the 2006 Amateur Community Theatre (ACT) Festival. We are on last, with Harbury and Barford performing before us. Tickets are available on the door (at the bargain price of £3). The fun kicks off at 7.45pm in the Village Hall, Harbury.

The festival runs until Friday.

Rehearsals are now well under way for May performances. 'Cards, Cups and Crystal Ball' by David Campton features supposedly clairvoyant sisters who's lives change when they receive a visit from a mysterious 'Lady M'.

Ever directed a play or thought about having a go? Then this is the workshop for you!

Warwickshire Amateur Community Theatre (ACT) are hosting a one-off workshop for all budding and experienced directors.

When? 8pm Tuesday 21 February 2006

Where? Methodist Church Hall, Barrack Street, Warwick (just along from the library)

The workshop will cover all aspects of directing including:

play selection and casting
interpreting the script
speech delivery
developing timing techniques and pace
playing to the audience
managing the backstage and technical crews
coordinating costumes, publicity and front-of-house

The maximum cost to you will be just £4.

The new year always prompts people to make resolutions, and judging by my local gym many are usually to shed those extra Christmas kilo's! Why not try something different this year and involve
yourself in some very local drama.

At Wellesbourne's very own drama group, we have just performed our production of Raymond Hopkins 'The Love Nest' to a sell-out audience. Several WADS regulars were joined on stage by some new faces, bringing fresh talent to our small friendly group.
